The law describing the
Washington State Flag was passed by the legislature in 1923.
Prior to the official law, a blue and gold military flag was
flown as the Washington State Flag. George
Washington's profile was depicted on this Washington State
flag.
When the law was passed in 1923, the Washington State
Flag was described "...of dark green silk or bunting and shall
bear in its center a reproduction of the seal of the state of
Washington..."
The Washington State flag and the state seal are similar. In
the late 1890s, a blue and gold military Washington State Flag with
George Washington's profile on it flew over many cities and
towns throughout the state. But, when it came to a final
decision, the current Washington State flag was adopted by the
Legislature. The Washington State Flag is green, which
is an uncommon color for a state flag. The Washington
State Flag does, however, bear the state seal, like many
others. |
