On
the Virginia State flag, a deep blue field contains the
seal of Virginia with the Latin motto " Sic Semper Tyrannis" -
"Thus Always to Tyrants". This Virginia State flag was adopted
in 1776. The two figures on the Virginia State flag are acting out the meaning of the
motto. Both are dressed as warriors. The woman on the Virginia
State flag, Virtue,
represents Virginia. The man holding a scourge and chain on
the Virginia State flag, shows
that he is a tyrant. His fallen crown is nearby.
In 1861, the Virginia State Convention passed an ordinance
establishing a Virginia State flag design virtually identical
to the Virginia State flag in current use. This Virginia State flag has a deep
blue field with a circular white center. The obverse of the
great seal of the Commonwealth has been identically painted or
embroidered on each side of the Virginia State flag. A white
silk fringe adorns the Virginia State flag edge farthest from the flag staff.
In 1954, the General Assembly adopted an official salute to
the Virginia State flag which states:
"I salute the (Virginia State flag), with reverence and patriotic
devotion to the ‘Mother of States and Statesmen,’ which it
represents—the ‘Old Dominion,’ where liberty and independence
were born." Like many state flags, the
Virginia State flag is blue.
