 The
South Dakota flag is quite simple. The current South
Dakota flag was modeled after the previous South Dakota flag.
The state seal of South Dakota is centered on the sky blue
field of the South Dakota flag. The seal is surrounded by the rays of the sun.
Encircling the seal and the sun are the words, "South Dakota"
and "The Mount Rushmore State".
The original South Dakota flag (adopted in 1909) had an image
of the sun on the front. Tthe state's seal was on the back of
the South Dakota flag. In
1963, the state's seal and the sun's rays were both placed on
the front of the South Dakota flag (with nothing on the back
of the South Dakota flag). In 1992 the old South Dakota flag motto, "The Sunshine State," was
changed to "The Mount Rushmore State". The original South
Dakota flag design was by Senator Ernest May and Doane
Robinson, secretary of the State Historical Society. Will
Robinson, Doane Robinson's son, redesigned the South Dakota
flag in 1963. Like many others, the South Dakota flag is
blue. The South Dakota flag also bears the state seal.
